Corneal Ulcer
A corneal ulcer is an open sore that forms on the cornea. It's usually caused by an infection. Even small injuries to the eye or erosion caused by wearing contact lenses too long can lead to infections.
Symptoms of corneal ulcers include:
- redness of the eye
- severe pain and soreness of the eye
- the feeling of having something in your eye
- tearing
- pus or other discharge
- blurred vision
- sensitivity to light
- swelling of the eyelids
- a white spot on your cornea that you may or may not be able to see when looking in the mirror
Who Is At Risk for Corneal Ulcer?
People at risk for corneal ulcers include:
- contact lens wearers
- steroid eye drops
- dry eye
- eyelid disorders
- injury or burn of corneaBacterial infections.Viral infections.Fungal infections.Parasitic (Acanthamoeba) infections.
Corneal Ulcer Treatment
Medical: Antibiotic, antifungal or antiviral eye drops are the treatments of choice.Surgical treatment: debridement, corneal transplant.
